What does it mean to claim a personal item w/ carry on while flying

What does it mean to claim a personal item w/ carry on while flying?
This summer I'm going to Brazil and I've never made a big trip like this before. I was wondering, when you have carry on luggage and you claim a personal item, what does that mean? What if I want to carry my laptop, camera, a couple CDs, all my expensive stuff, with me on my carry on? Is that allowed? What do I do?! Help...:(

Carry everything expensive in your carry on..............hand carry your laptop and camera. That is allowed!!!!! But remember...no lotions or liquids in your carry on....
Answer 2 :
A personal item is something you can have in addition to your main carry on. If you carry on both, your carry on will have to be stored in the overhead compartment, and your personal item will have to fit under the seat in front of you. For this reason, the size limits of the personal item are usually smaller than for your main carry on. You will have to visit the website of the airline you are flying with to find out what their size restrictions are on personal items. A personal item could be a male or female purse, diaper bag, laptop, briefcase, camera bag, etc. I would put all of your expensive items that you won't be using during the flight in your main carry on that will be stowed in the overhead compartment, then put your laptop, CDs, etc. that you would like to use during flight in one bag to put under the seat in front of you. Many airlines will also allow you to carry on one more item, like a book, without it having to be in any bag. You need to visit your airline's website to see what their specifics are
