Remote desktop control somehow

Remote desktop control somehow?
My boss is in Brazil, and he has a laptop I need to access. He gave me his IP, from going to whatismyip.com, but I'm unable to connect using Remote Desktop Connection. It should be set up to allow it. Is there any free online service that's easy to set up? He doesn't know anything, and I can't walk him through difficult tasks. So, it would be best if I could just send him a link that will give me control of his computer.

Answer 1 :
logmein.com
Answer 2 :
http://www.gotomypc.com is a very good easy to use site which will allow this. I hope this has answered your question. E-mail me if you have any problems at all. Thanks Lewich
Answer 3 :
Hey there, I had a similar problem a while back and solved it using Team Viewer. You can check it out at http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspx Cheers & good luck, Peter G
Answer 4 :
I have found that Online IP finders are not quite accurate. To find your IP you can do the following. On a PC ---------- Go to Start...Run Type "cmd" At the cursor prompt, type "ipconfig" and you will see your IP address. If you should happen to see more than one IP address, you will, most likely, want the IP address associated with the Ethernet interface.
Answer 5 :
Teamviewer is the easiest to use. It also comes with other utilities like VPN and presentation. Have him install it, and you install it. Once he runs it he needs to give you the session ID and password. Then you connect and it's all taken care of. It traverses firewalls and access-lists, and is very easy to use.
Answer 6 :
Easiest way to do it is use Windows Live Messenger. During conversation your boss selects Actions-Request Remote assistance. You click accept and go from there

Apple macbook laptop : is it possible to replace the battery? Or do I have to buy a new laptop

Apple macbook laptop : is it possible to replace the battery? Or do I have to buy a new laptop?
I have a white apple macbook laptop, which the battery is decaying. When I try and charge it, it will not charge past 85%. It loses power at about 1% per minute, when it used to lose power at 1% per 3 minutes. Can I take my laptop into a computer specialist and get the battery replaced so the battery lasts longer? Or is there a charging device I can hook up to hit so that I can save my battery? Or do I have to buy a new laptop? I'm in university, and I use my laptop to type lecture notes, as I'm a much faster typer than handwriter. University doesn't begin for another 2 weeks, and I'd like to see if there's anything I can do about the laptop's battery before it starts. The laptop was bought in Brazil by my boyfriend's parents and given to me for my 17th birthday. It will be my 19th in 3 days. They said, if the battery cannot be replaced and there is nothing I can buy that is attachable to the macbook that they will buy me a new one. However I don't want them to waste their money on me...and I cant believe a laptop's battery is only good for 2 years! I thought it would last much longer before it began to decay. I took good care of it...It fell of the table once or twice in university...but I was always gentle with it so I could keep it as long as possible.

Answer 1 :
The battery is located underneath the laptop. Just take it to the Apple store's Genius Bar (make an appointment on Apple.com) and have them replace it for you. It's about $80-130 for a new battery but you'll get about 3-4 hours of use on a single charge again. Batteries don't usually last very long. Mine is three years old but consensus seems to suggest that I'm very lucky. Just buy a new battery. No big deal. Underneath your laptop, there are one or two sliding hinges. Turn your computer off and slide them to remove the battery. What you'll be holding in your hands is the battery itself. If you'd rather not spend $80 on a new one, go to a place like eBay or NewEgg.com and buy it individually. It's a very quick and painless switch. Make sure you dispose of your old battery properly.
Answer 2 :
I do not have enough info to be exact (model #/ser #) but, I believe most all macbooks have replaceable batteries. I'm pointing you to the mac page for battery replacement
Answer 3 :
Hey, I just had to return mine, so no worries. You can buy the battery on line at the apple website, just make sure you are getting the right one for your computer, including the right color. It's a bit expensive, about $130, but very replaceable, infact, most batteries have to be replaced about once a year, I am told, or after they have hit 330 cycles of recharging. I know how frustrating it can be, especially since when it happened to me I didn't know what was going on. I would order the battery, but until then keep your charger handy, because without the battery you won't even be able to turn your computer on.
Answer 4 :
i doubt being gentle will help the battery ive kicked mine of my bed atleast 4 times and its fine just take it to a good computer place im sure they will do it for you but who doesnt want a new laptop???

Dell laptop... should I be worried

Dell laptop... should I be worried?
I have A dell inspiron laptop, and have moved to another country for six months... it has had a bit of a hard time making the adjustment... The powercord broke, and a screw needs replacing on the monitor. It is a year old, and has had one bad spell, where the hard drive crashed. Since then, it does what I want. I am now in Brazil, and so the internet I am using is a little different, a little slower.. And the computer has taken to shutting down if it is not in use like a screensaver, only it just turns off, because while the new powercord works, it as seen a risk because it is an import (but still Dell brand). This doesnt happen 100% of the time, sometime it just puts up my screensaver or goes to sleep. Now, none of this really concerned me, the screw should be easy, and the shutting down is inconvieniant at most. Until today, when I was using my comp to watch a movie, it shut down... I thought nothing of it, I hadn't touched the mouse pad for a while... It took four times to turn back on, every time pulling up my desktop, and then shutting down, and now, its finally on for a while, it seems. Now I am worried. What could it be? Virus? How long, on average, do laptops last? Should I be worried? Or will this all be okay when I get back to the states? Thanks in advance!
Laptops & Notebooks - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Old Laptops normally do that. My recommendation would be to just get a new one.
Answer 2 :
yes you should be worried, its not a virus it has something to do with the internet and the way the laptop is made to function. you see that laptop was made to work in the united states, the reason its shouting down is because there is a script in Brazilian internet that your computer is taking as a command from dell to shout down. once you get back to the states it will be fine

Is getting open source software a good idea

Is getting open source software a good idea?
My husband and I are buying a laptop (a Dell) for his nephew in Brazil. I can get a refurbished one for pretty cheap but it doesn't come with anything except the Microsoft XP Pro OS. Brazil is an open-source country so do I need to put Freeware or OpenOffice.org on it? Also, if we do get the open source software, how compatible will it be with programs like MSN Messenger and such? The less money we have to spend, the better, but we want to make sure we get the right software for him (and us so we can talk to him). Would it be better to get one without an OS as well, and get something else instead? I would be setting it all up for him here as I don't really know how tech-savvy he is. If you have any other ideas, please feel free to share. Thanks!!
Software - 8 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Like anything that you get for free you have to be careful. You get what you pay for.
Answer 2 :
if he isnt really tech savvy, then get him closed source. open source is for people that know what they are doing.
Answer 3 :
yes ur on the right track imo ... get the OS with it or that will just be a headache ... u could pirate an OS but thats illegal :) .... anyway, yes , open source will be fine ... openoffice is fine ... almost anything u want to do u can get freeware for ... and there shouldnt be any incompatibility problems if u stick to popular freeware ...
Answer 4 :
Do you actually understand the concept of Open Source Software? The only thing that differs from closed source software, is the price and the fact the code is open. You can put anything you like on the Laptop. If you don't want to pay, use open source software. If you can't find it in Open source, then you'll have to pay. Things like OO (Open Office) will work fine with closed source software like MSN.
Answer 5 :
YES!, openoffice is amazing.. msn messenger has nothing to do with the opensource software you install, it runs on its own within the windows enviroment. if you plan to dump windows then get ubuntu, it's a great linux distrobution. i can't remember the name of the chat client that's on linux but it basically does all the chat programs in one (yahoo, msn, icq, aol, etc..) it's really cool because you only have to have one portal to talk to people on different services :) EDIT: i see someone thumbdowned the guy that said opensource is for people that know what they are doing, that can be partially true for some programs, i mean mounting drives and crap like that isn't something a windows user can do right off the bat.
Answer 6 :
It's a very good Idea, but the key is getting the files from a good source like OpenCD. And you can get some good Opensource software from sourceforge.net (but be careful that the project is mature and WELL KNOWN) this cuts the threat of viruses way down. Filter Require Development Status Mature
Answer 7 :
There are a whole range of open source programs and programmers. Many are better built than proprietary programs, many are not. I would recommend OpenOffice as an office suite. It can do almost anything normal people need out of Microsoft Office and is very compatible. Check out Google for a number of Google supported programs such as Picasa, a photo program. For hard core graphic editing, Gimp is comparable to the best proprietary software. And, of course, I'd install Firefox for a better browser experience. One other category is malware. These programs are free or have free versions (for personal use) but are not open source. For a firewall, I use ZoneAlarm. For antivirus I use Avast but I have also heard a number of good things about AVG. For spyware I use SpyBot Search and Destroy and AdAware. For system file defense, I use WinPatrol. As far as IM, I don't use is so I can't speak from personal experience but I've heard good things about Miranda. If you want to replace Outlook, I would recommend Thunderbird (by the same group that develops Firefox) although I keep my mail online at Yahoo Mail so, again, I am not speaking from personal experience. As another person recommended, if you want to get away from MS entirely, Ubuntu is the easiest Linux distribution to use. I would not be afraid of open source. One person mentioned viruses but you should not see any of these at reputable sites like Sourceforge. What you will see, and what you need to look out for is programs that are not ready yet. Open source tends to release code that is still in testing so that it can be tested by a broader group of people. Look for programs that have gotten past version 1. I would also recommend searching reputable magazines like PC Magazine or PC World for some of their articles on open source and other free programs. Good luck. Who knows, you might find some programs for your own use.
Answer 8 :
I've been using open-source software for quite some time. Many items are quite good. I use OOo, Clam, Firefox, Tbird, among others, no problems, great performance and benefits. I keep up with their forums and even keep installing the latest "betas" and "release candidates". Clam is *very* good about catching viruses. Firefox is a very good browser, and Tbird (plus calendar add-in) is very good for email - if you use offline email. And none is incompatible in file format with "regulation" products! (I've kept copies of "regulation" products around just in case, but don't really need to...) Go to sourceforge.net for ideas on most open-source software

All the things you mentioned are allowed to be brought as carry on to the airplane in the US. You can pack them in either one of the 2 carry on bags allowed for each passenger free of charge, one bigger bag that fits in the overhead bin plus a small one like a computer bag that fits underneath the seat. For the dimensions allowed check your airline's website

okay, Your video card is likely the problem, but what I would do is take the ram out and the battery and the power cable for like 10 seconds then put everything back and then try it. If that doesn't work you Video card or CPU is likely Fried. So hopefully you got a warranty if non of that works. Sorry for your problem hope it works out

Is it possible to charge my macbook pro on a plane

Is it possible to charge my macbook pro on a plane?
Im flying to Brazil tonight, and it is an 8 hour flight, I'm flying american airlines, and i would like to know if it is possible to charge my laptop on the plane
Software - 4 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
There are no outlets on airplanes so the answer is no. Just charge it fully before and you can get almost 7 hours out of it. But I wouldn't think that you'd be on your laptop for 8 hours straight, the entire flight. Charging it full and you'll be ok.
Answer 2 :
See if your local stores have a piece of equipment called Hyperjuice. Hyper juice is an external battery designed for Apple products. I'd suggest best buy or the Apple store.....
Answer 3 :
Some airplanes have outlets and these could be standard AC outlets, or 12V car outlets (like for a cigarette lighter). However, it's going to depend entirely on the plane you're flying, but longer flights do tend to have planes that have outlets.
Answer 4 :
Sometimes airplanes have outlets, and sometimes they don't. They may be normal AC outlets (like in your house) or DC outlets (like in your car). A good way to make sure you can charge is to get an external charger or extra battery, rather than rely on airplane outlets (which aren't always there, especially on smaller planes)

Answer 2 :
one carry-on and your purse.
Answer 3 :
Your laptop will be considered as one carry on. They probably won't count your purse unless it is really big. If you can, take a large bag with you, like a book bag or duffel bag. I was once stopped and told by the TSA agent to "CONSOLIDATE!" I couldn't believe that he said that to me. I had to put everything, including my purse into a shopping bag with things that I had bought while traveling. My other carry on was a backpack that was already full.
Answer 4 :
It varies from airline to airline. Which one are you using? Usually you can have one carry-on (your laptop) and one other item (your purse or a small backpack). Check with your airline to see what they allow.
Answer 5 :
I just returned from England and could only have one item as carryon, so did I bring little suitcase carryon or new fake Louis Vuitton?? Had to dump the Vuitton at the airport.... Check with your airline to be sure. Also, if you have gels, small liquids you must put them in a small plastic bag & carry it through security.
Answer 6 :
you can bring 1 carry on and ur hanbag-so you can bring laptop n purse!

Answer 1 :
I don't think there is any, because of the varying differences between country regulations or the roaming charges are often really huge. I would just see if the ship you are on has any wireless access built in. There is mobile satellite, but that is kinda expensive, slow, and hard to set up. Also they are made for putting them on trucks and RV, not boats

if you both are running windows you both can sign up with windows live. then you can use remote assist and access there computer to fix it
Answer 2 :
if you have windows just go on to their site and read about their remote desktop access. if you do both follow the steps u should be able to view her computer on your screen. -> click it http://www.microsoft.com/windowsXp/using/mobility/getstarted/Remoteintro.mspx
Answer 3 :
Go to the MSN Web site (http://download.live.com/?sku=messenger) to download or enter your User Name and password to log in to your account. Open MSN Messenger by double clicking on the program in the system tray. View your list of friends and family and see if someone is online who can provide assistance. Contact an available person with an instant message to see if he or she can help you. Use MSN Messenger to Request Remote Assistance 1 Click the "Actions" link and then choose "Request Remote Assistance" from the menu. 2 View the list of available people from the "My Contacts" box that opens up. 3 Click on the name of the person you want to ask for remote assistance. 4 Click the "OK" button to send the request. 5 Wait for the other person to accept your request. 6 Click "Yes" to begin a chat session. This will allow you chat during the remote assistance session. 7 Explain your request in the chat session and click "Send" to send the message. Use MSN Messenger to Provide Remote Assistance 1 Open MSN Messenger on your computer. 2 Click "Accept" when you receive the remote assistance request. 3 Click the "Take Control" button to assume control of the remote computer after receiving the reason why the remote session is needed from the other person.

Remote Assistance is something you can use if you both have XP or later: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/remoteassist/intro.mspx Or you can use some kind of VNC software. I like the look of this one which you can get a plug in for: http://majorgeeks.com/UltraVNC_d4143.html Plug-in: http://majorgeeks.com/Remote_Access_Control_RAC_d6357.html There's a bunch of them, freeware, shareware, that you can find here: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?id=2 The keyword to look for in any of them is the word "remote"

This summer I'm going to Brazil and I've never made a big trip like this before. I was wondering, when you have carry on luggage and you claim a personal item, what does that mean? What if I want to carry my laptop, camera, a couple CDs, all my expensive stuff, with me on my carry on? Is that allowed? What do I do?! Help...:(

Answer 1 :
Carry everything expensive in your carry on..............hand carry your laptop and camera. That is allowed!!!!! But remember...no lotions or liquids in your carry on....
Answer 2 :
A personal item is something you can have in addition to your main carry on. If you carry on both, your carry on will have to be stored in the overhead compartment, and your personal item will have to fit under the seat in front of you. For this reason, the size limits of the personal item are usually smaller than for your main carry on. You will have to visit the website of the airline you are flying with to find out what their size restrictions are on personal items. A personal item could be a male or female purse, diaper bag, laptop, briefcase, camera bag, etc. I would put all of your expensive items that you won't be using during the flight in your main carry on that will be stowed in the overhead compartment, then put your laptop, CDs, etc. that you would like to use during flight in one bag to put under the seat in front of you. Many airlines will also allow you to carry on one more item, like a book, without it having to be in any bag. You need to visit your airline's website to see what their specifics are

Can I connect my Laptop AC adaptor to an Argentinian outlet or it won't fit

Can I connect my Laptop AC adaptor to an Argentinian outlet or it won't fit?
I ask this because my laptop has an North American standard plug, and I need to use it when I am over Argentina... Do I need to buy an adaptor? I am currently in Brazil, and here's outlets accept North American plugs, as well as the Brazilian. Is this the case in Argentina?

Electricity: 220V, 50Hz. Argentina uses the European two prong and the Australian slanted plugs on most wall electrical outlets. http://www.allaboutar.com/travel_facts.htm

No. TV from UK will never work in Brazil because of TV system also digital tuner . UK TV is PAL I TV system , Brazil is the only countries use PAL M system, All PAL systems ( B / G / D / K / I / H / N ) interoperable except PAL-M . PAL M is 525 /60 Lines / Fields also totally different audio sub-carriers . PAL B / G / D / K / I / H / N is 625 / 50 Lines/Fields . you unable to convert / change PAL I / B / G / D / K to PAL M - beyond technically. UK TV use DVB-T digital tuner, Brazil use ISDB T INTENTIONAL tuner. even analog PAL broadcast continues until 2016 , but is PAL M system. you cannot get PAL M TV also ISDB T INTENTIONAL tuner TV in other countries except Brazil

Import tax in brazil

Import tax in brazil???
Im going to brazil for 20 days and I want to bring stuff for my family. Im thinking about brining two laptops, video camera, digital camera, and other small things like mp3 players and cloths. Some one told me that they tax you on imported stuff. Is this true? Has anyone brought alot of electronics wtih them and had to pay some sort of tax??? Thanks
Packing & Preparation - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Dear Artie, The word here is DONT! You will have to pay some hefty taxes to "Recieta Federal"( Brazils IRS) to import these types of goods. If you dont pay the taxes, the goods will be confiscated, okay ! take the money to Brazil with you nd buy in Brazil, these items are coming down in price rapidly and you can buy them online for your family at "mercadolivre.com.br", Brazils "Ebay" auction.
Answer 2 :
Latin Techie advice is fairly good, but as a tourist you are allowed to bring in one laptop and camera for personal use. Bring them in, post the instructions ahead of time, and leave the original packaging behind. The downside of all this , will be your family will have no 12 months guarantee coverage if there's a problem with the material. Boa Sorte

What is the best place for shopping in NYC

What is the best place for shopping in NYC?
I would be deeply grateful if you can tell a first-time in NY brazilian tourist the best places to buy: 1) Laptops and cameras 2) Unexpensive Clothes 3) NIKE Sneakers 4) Unexpensive small products for my friends in Brazil. AH! Is there any place I should avoid? Or because they're expensive or cheap quality? Thank you very much!
New York City - 4 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
stay out of manhattan, they are priced kinda high....i find that shopping in the boro's...brooklyn, queens etc is much better. try steinway street in queens. every other store is a shop like what ur looking for. and they even sell 220 watts for overseas outlets. i once bought a microwave there to send to my sister in law from egypt.
Answer 2 :
Brooklyn is the place to get cheap goods. Try to prevent Manhattan
Answer 3 :
I agree with the other person..Canal Street used to be great for that stuff...but due to tourists, the people who sell there have jacked up the prices because they feel they can (this frustrates me because growing up in new york, i loved going there for cheap items that weren't all that bad with quality) If your idea for inexpensive is different than mine, there are great places in the city for that...Uptown has really nice designer spots as well as the fashion district..but they're not cheap as these brands never are unless they're bootlegs. **If you are dead set on getting "souvenirs" for your friends in Brazil though, Canal has tons..just don't let them rip you off and try to talk them down in price. If they tell you they are the only ones who have these items, tell them you saw them right down the block at "that other stand/store" and they'll probably try to work with you. I caught a tourist couple in that situation and helped them out with it.
Answer 4 :
electronics probably go to chain stores in bestbuy, target. unexpensive brand name clothes go to burlington coat factory, tj maxxx, marshalls. sneakers go to the manhattan mall, queens center mall. unexpensive small products go to chinatown canal street. i would not buy electronics from chinatown since they are all fake and will break easily

What kind of laptop should I buy

What kind of laptop should I buy?
I'm moving to Brazil shortly and I need a good laptop to use while I'm there. My top priorities for this laptop are 1) WoW 2) Long battery life 3) Light weight (I'll be traveling a lot within Brazil this year) I don't know anything about laptops so all help is appreciated. I'll also be applying for colleges back home while I'm there and I'll be running Skype a lot. I'd like to keep the price around $500 dollars. Thanks for all help!

Answer 2 :
i would suggest netbook especially Acer Aspire AS1410-2497 11.6-Inch Blue Laptop - Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) Considering the specs, that it comes with Win 7 Home Premium, and the price, this is a fantastic little machine. I wanted to use this for a perhaps slightly different purpose than most netbook users. I am a photographer and really wanted the ability to check photos in the field. Making sure things are in focus, for example, is often important because I do a lot of macro photography. It's impossible to really tell on a camera LCD how the image has turned out. I own an older laptop, but it's just too darn heavy to lug around all the time. I was a bit worried that the resolution of a 10-inch netbook would be too low to see good detail but with this netbook and its bright, higher-res screen, the details are all visible and the photos look great. Not that it would replace my desktop, but that's not its intended purpose. That said, it's useless in full sunlight but if you can find any sort of shady spot, it's pretty good. A lot of my work is done indoors anyway. I've found I have to crank up the screen brightness outdoors and that helps a lot. That probably would affect battery life, but I don't anticipate running out of power on a typical shoot anyway.

Safe way to mail from Brazil to USA

Safe way to mail from Brazil to USA?
On my last visit to Brazil I purchased a very nice piece of jewelry ($2,500 USD) for my mom's 50th birthday. Unfortunately, I'm a dope and I left the bag it was in at one of my friend's relatives house. To make a long story short, I want to send my friend's family enough money (and instructions) to ship the bag to me so it will arrive safely and legally. I am willing to pay whatever I need to. Besides the jewlery, the bag also contains a Dell laptop I bought in the summer of 2006 and some clothes I bought. Does anyone know how I can ship my things to the US from Brazil. Its a small bag and weighs maybe 5 lbs? Again, I want it to arrive here safely. Thank you for your response in advance.

Answer 1 :
Use either , Fedex or DHL. or Why don't you try and get a cheap air ticket and just go down and collect it.
Answer 2 :
You can use any courier, even the Brazilian post office (it's just as safe as the USPS) as long as you're able to ensure your package for the full amount. You're shipping really expensive stuff...your main concern should not be so much the Brazilian post office or UPS or FEdex, but you have to find put with US Customs how much they're gonna charge for you to receive that stuff. Maybe there'll be no cost, but sometimes they make you pay taxes on things you get from abroad, and they wont give the item to you unless you pay.
Answer 3 :
I would try to find someone to take the stuff. For expensive stuff it´s really risky to send by mail. If you live in Brazil and can insure the package (because if you try to claim anything from overseas, forget it) then at least you would have some peace of mind

how much it would cost to send a laptop from US to Brazil

how much it would cost to send a laptop from US to Brazil?
From North Carolina to Sao Paulo, just an idea.
Packing & Preparation - 4 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
there is no solid answer. there are numerous things required for this to be answered correctly. you will need the weight, dimensions of the box, value of the laptop, and so on. since it is being exported to another country, you will need to find a customs broker to clear in brazil. the best thing to do is to call a freight forwarding broker to get you a more accurate quote. try one of the links below to see if they can help you out. it may be cheaper just to buy one down there.
Answer 2 :
It depends on the cost of the laptop. Unless you hand carry it, it's not going to make it through customs. Don't ship anything of value through courier, mail, shipping, etc. If the laptop costs US$2000 and shipping costs US$50, you just lost $2050.
Answer 3 :
Cassy - the answer would really depend on the particular laptop involved, as there can be a fairly significant difference between the weights of various models. I guess the other major cost factor would be how quickly you want or need the computer to arrive. Here's an example: A Dell Inspiron 1520 weighs about 6 1/2 pounds. That's fairly typical of a lighter-weight laptop, I guess. You'll want to pack it carefully for shipping, so the actual package that you'll mail will probably weigh more like 7 1/2 pounds, let's say. Assuming that you declared a value for the laptop of something like $900, and shipped it in a box that was a little bit larger around than the computer, here's a few cost estimates (prepare to cringe!) UPS: $240-250 (depending on shipment time) Postal Service: $43-63 (again, depending on shipping time) FedEx: $200-220 In all cases, you'd be looking at something like 5-7 days for delivery, though the postal service offers Express, which I didn't quote you in the estimates above. A couple of things to think about: You'll need to research the relevant import duties that Brazil would charge for you to mail a laptop into the country ...and also...make sure that you find out if the electrical outlets at your destination are the same type that your American computer is designed to employ. Most of the Brazilian sockets are the same as US sockets (though they deliver a slightly higher voltage), but there are some oddball outlets in Brazil that won't play nice with your non-Brazilian electronic devices. Hope that helps. Pack it carefully, and unless money is no object, you'll probably want to consider the good old US Post Office as your first option.
Answer 4 :
you may be able to fit the laptop in a usps priority mail box international rate for maybe $50

What type of power do they use in Argentina and Brazil - 120 or 240 V

What type of power do they use in Argentina and Brazil - 120 or 240 V?
I am travelling there for business in June and also to England. I am thinking of getting a power converter for my laptop. I have a Dell D620.
Other - Electronics - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
We use 220 volts to be precise. Anyhow, if you plug a 240 volt electronic device it will work as well. Check if your laptop converter accepts 110-240 volts, as most convertors nowadays do.
Answer 2 :
Argentina C, I 220 V 50 Hz Brazil A, B, C, I 110 V and 220 V 60 Hz Check the power pack on the laptop cord to see if it handles 220/240V. You will probably just either need a plug-type adapter on the end, or a different cable running from the power pack to the wall.
Answer 3 :
Argentina: officially 220V 50Hz Brasil: Both 127V/60Hz or 220V/60Hz (North American or European plug) although 127 is more common. Don't worry about this though because your dell should be able to handle from 100V to 240V. Check the power adapter or power supply, it will be written on it

I'm going to Brazil to visit my girlfriend: can I take my Playstation 3 with games and controllers on board

I'm going to Brazil to visit my girlfriend: can I take my Playstation 3 with games and controllers on board?
Hi everyone. So as the title states, I'm flying out of the UK to visit my gf in Brazil. I'd like to know if I can take my PS3 with 3 games and 2 controllers in my carry-on luggage - the PS3 could go in my laptop bag?? Has anyone done/tried this without customs taking my equipment?? Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
PlayStation - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Yeah I did once , the PS3 with all the cables and controllers as hand luggage , but it was not to Brazil so really dont know anything about that , but nothing happened at customs here in Doha
Answer 2 :
Yea probably because if the PS3 is like a weapon or some sort you shouldn't bring it aboard a plane
Answer 3 :
Well i once brought my PS2 out of the US. And no, they X-rayed my bag and were fine with the things in it. You just have to assemble your PS3 equipment neatly and tidily. That way, they could clearly see what's in your laptop bag. And no, they won't do anything to your PS3. Unless something in your luggage/bag looks like some sort of malicious weapon. Till then, relax. Good luck and have a safe trip

I checked customs n it says "Technically, the limit for goods brought back by Brazilians/residents to the country (via air travel) is US$500.00.

Can I charge all my UK stuff (ipod, laptop, etc) in Brazil as I'm travelling there end of year

Can I charge all my UK stuff (ipod, laptop, etc) in Brazil as I'm travelling there end of year?
Stuff like: PSP player laptop Ipod Speakers, etc Where I am going is not a tourist hotel so voltage is not 220v but just your ordinary 120v.

if you know a bit about electronics you could buy a stepup transformer that creates 220v out of 120v

Some regions have 110v and other regions have 220v (always states). There are someplaces that can provide both to you. You need check with your Hotels. Please check if your laptop and camcorder are able to run within this range.... or else, you will need to buy "transformador" there that will provide correct voltage to you

Selling laptops to Latin American consumers

Selling laptops to Latin American consumers?
I have a friend who regularly purchases a laptop in the $1,500 range, travels to Brazil with it, and sells it for double the price. The profit pays for his plane ticket. Is there a way to do this legally with refurbished laptops through advertising on ebay or other public marketplace?

You have to remember one thing. Laptops and digital camera equipment is 'cheap' in its own way here in the US compared to countries like the European East block, some African countries and South America. EBay is not going to do it since they are not trading there, even if the potential client can see it on line, the payments and delivery will be a problem. What will help [to the best of my knowledge] is to get someone on the other side to act as an agent or advertise directly with them and hope they don't answer in their native tongue! My mate from Romania is doing the exact same thing and he is making quite some good profit! They CAN get it cheaper if they search around, but if you can get it sold, why not!

I'm not sure exactly where you're sending it from, or where you're sending it to, but here's what I found by saying I'd send it from Sao Paolo, Brazil (04552-050) to Apple in Seattle, WA (98104). I chose to send it with your own packaging, and had the custom value of $1500 US Dollars and the declared value (important insurance) also of $1500 US Dollars. I said the package weighed about 5 KGs (11 lbs). At www.ups.com, the price for sending it ranged from $152 - $195, which takes from 3 - 6 days. The $160 option (UPS Express Saver) seemed the best option if you're in a hurry, as it takes 4 days. Insurance was really only about $5, so you definitely want to make sure you get that. At www.fedex.com, the price for sending a package was $140 US Dollars. However, it was requested that I specify what was in the package, and when I specified that it was a laptop, the price did jump up to $220. I'm not sure if that's a requirement or not. It took 3 days, so you could get it there by the 24th if you send it tomorrow. I wasn't able to get a price quote at www.dhl.com because I'd have to register, and I don't feel like doing that. Hopefully this gives you an idea about whether it's cost effective to do this. Aren't there Apple stores in Brazil now? I don't speak Portugese, but maybe if you go to this site you can find a distributor to return it to there. http://latam.apple.com/buy/br/ Otherwise, you could always eBay it, though you'd probably take a hit equal to or greater than the shipping. Good Luck
